What is a Local Area Consultant?

A Local Area Consultant is sometimes referred to as a Local Area Coordinator. Local Area Coordination is the single largest investment by the National Disability Insurance Agency in delivering outcomes for Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC). It is also worth noting that LAC is one of the 5 types of ILC activities.

With Australia currently transitioning into the NDIS, Local Area Coordinators will have their plates full. Theirs is mostly ground work; which means that they work, at local level, with participants to create awareness of the scheme. The idea is to help participants develop strong and inclusive relationships with their community which is, frankly, a welcoming move from the conventional centralized standard of service delivery.

LAC providers have extensive experience in community work and the necessary skills required in building and maintaining a positive change or trend in the community.

Local Area Coordinators’ Roles

LACs aim to support large numbers of NDIS participants by providing different forms of assistance such as; accessing information and building informal and natural supports. NDIS’s planning process and plan implementation is also something that LACs can help participants with. Their goal is to implement various parts of ILC and foster community inclusion by being visible and active in the community.
ILC through LACs, work with participants as well as non-participants to provide helpful and relevant information, links and referrals and boost disability confidence. They are the primary body tasked with advising and encouraging community organizations as well as mainstream services to become more inclusive in supporting people living with disability.

With that in mind, the LACs role can be split into 3 key areas;

  • Linking participants and providers to the NDIS
  • Linking participants to the information and support available in the community
  • Ensuring that the scheme is accessible to, and inclusive for people living with disability

There are several stages involved when accessing the NDIS. LACs will help you understand the Participant Pathway and move from stage to stage right to your first plan. They will also help you review your plan after the 12-month period with a view to identifying what supports you need and those you don’t; as well as establishing your future goals and all options available to you.

Linking participants to information and supports available in the community is aimed at helping them develop skills and confidence to take part in various interesting community activities. It also gives the participants an idea of what to expect from mainstream supports such as; education, employment and health. Overall, LACs will have a close working relationship with organizations that provide ILC.
